Museums and Botanical Garden

Science is building knowledge – for natural history collections, this includes not only research work but also educational work to transport knowledge into the general public. In addition to school lessons, extracurricular places of learning, such as natural history museums, the showcases of natural history collections, are also in demand here.

In addition to the six Bavarian Natural History Collections in the fields of zoology, botany, geology and palaeontology, mineralogy, anthropology and palaeoanatomy, the SNSB unites eight natural history museums. Four of them are located in Munich: the Museum Mensch und Natur, the Museum Mineralogia München, the Palaeontological Museum and the Geological Museum. The Botanical Garden München-Nymphenburg is also located there. Bavaria is also home to four other SNSB museums: the Naturkunde-Museum Bamberg, the Urwelt-Museum Oberfranken in Bayreuth, the Jura-Museum Eichstätt and the RiesCraterMuseum Nördlingen.

The SNSB museums present around 30 special exhibitions per year. Over 700,000 people visit the exhibitions of the Bavarian Natural History Collections, including the Botanical Garden, every year.
