Curator of the Diptera collection – Zoological Collection of the Bavarian State

The Natural History Collections of the Bavarian State (SNSB) are among the oldest and largest research collections in the world. They unite natural history collections in the fields of zoology, botany, geology, paleontology, mineralogy, anthropology and paleoanatomy – including the living collections of the Botanic Garden. Around 280 employees archive and conduct research on around 32 million objects. The SNSB’s collection, research, and knowledge transfer activities focus on geo- and biosphere change, with a particular emphasis on alpine systems in time and space. With our national and international research, we contribute significantly to a deeper understanding of geo- and biodiversity and the impact of human activity on the Earth’s ecosystem. The Division of Entomology of the Zoological Collection of the Bavarian State (Zoologische Staatssammlung München, ZSM, a department of the SNSB) offers a full-time, permanent position as

Curator of the Diptera collection

Responsibilites

• Curatorial supervision of the Diptera collection.
• Organismic research related to collections, preferably in the fields of systematics, taxonomy, evolution, museomics, genomics and/or ecology of insects. Ideally, but not necessarily, this research should reflect a focus on Diptera.
• Cooperation in joint, cross-collection research projects to strengthen the research profile of the SNSB, e.g. in the priority areas of alpine systems or biosphere change.

Required qualifications

• PhD or doctorate in Biology, with a focus on entomology.
• Experience with insect collections management and collections-based research.
• Strong publication record in systematic entomology, covering fields such as biogeography, phylogeny, species discovery, and evolutionary biology.
• Documented experience in phylogenomics and/or population genomics, as well as the related bioinformatic pipelines and programming.
• Fluency in English and preferably also German (if not the latter, a commitment to take language courses should be present).

Desired qualifications

• Molecular laboratory work experience.
• Successful acquisition of third-party funding.
• Interest in cooperative projects with other research teams at the ZSM (and also other departments of SNSB, e.g. in botany).
