Museums and Botanical Garden

Science is building knowledge – for natural history collections, this includes not only research work but also educational work to transport knowledge into the general public. In addition to school lessons, extracurricular places of learning, such as natural history museums, the showcases of natural history collections, are also in demand here.

In addition to the Bavarian State Collections of Natural History in the fields of zoology, botany, geology and palaeontology, mineralogy, anthropology and palaeoanatomy, the SNSB unites ten natural history museums. Five of them are located in Munich: the Museum Mensch und Natur, the Museum Mineralogia München, the Palaeontological Museum and the Geological Museum and the BIOTOPIA Lab. The Botanical Garden München-Nymphenburg is also located in Munich. Bavaria is also home to five other SNSB museums: the Naturkunde-Museum Bamberg, the Urwelt-Museum Oberfranken in Bayreuth, the Jura-Museum Eichstätt, the RiesCraterMuseum Nördlingen and the Bionicum Nürnberg.

The SNSB museums present around 30-40 temporary exhibitions per year. 800,000 people visit the exhibitions of the Bavarian State Collections of Natural History, including the Botanical Garden, every year.
